“I Feel Like My Child Is Out Control” – You’re not alone—help is here
Every family faces challenges. Whether your child is angry, defiant, experiencing behavioral challenges, refusing to follow rules, or making risky choices, it can leave you feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next.
Youth Prevention Services (YPS) offers free counseling for youth and families in Sarasota and DeSoto Counties—at home, in schools, or within the community. Our goal is simple to step in early, strengthen communication between youth and caregivers, and help prevent destructive behavior before it escalates.
Parents and caregivers may be able to resolve most of these problems quickly, but sometimes families have problems that push them to the limit, and they may require CINS/FINS services.
Understanding CINS/FINS Services
CINS/FINS stands for Children/Families In Need of Services. The Florida Legislature passed a law (Chapter 984, F.S.) that provides early intervention and support to children aged 6-17 years old and their families. The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) funds and supports these programs to help keep youth out of the justice system and on a better path.
If your child is running away, skipping school, refusing to follow rules, or struggling with housing instability, you’re not alone and support is available. These services are designed to help youth improve their behavior, strengthen family communication, and find healthier ways to cope with conflict.
